The Veteran Build program started in 2013 as a way of helping returning military servicemen, veterans and their families to reintegrate back into society by volunteering to work on homes in their communities. Habitat found that it gave the military person a new purpose and a new mission to focus on. It also helped to reestablish communication, team work and possible job solutions with civilians and companies in their local area. It has now developed into something much more. The Veteran Build program is likened to a three legged stool with focus in the following areas:
Building
Critical Home Repair:
Safe, decent, affordable housing is the centerpiece of the veteran build program. In many communities, we are expanding programs to help with critical home repairs for active military members, veterans and their families who can not afford to do the work themselves. Applicants must meet certain income guidelines and repairs are for a primary homes with no intent to sell. We partner with the Home Depot Foundation, Owens Corning and others to help with repairs such as putting on a new roof, siding, painting, and small construction items.
Volunteer engagement
We provide volunteer experiences that bring together veterans, military families and their neighbors. These experiences help bridge the gap and ease the transition to civilian life with fulfilling community engagement. You can find a Habitat office near you for volunteer opportunities in your community. Since 2013 Habitat has made it a grassroots effort to address the needs of returning soldiers, veterans and their families by helping them reintegrate back into society, have a new purpose and mission while building alongside people in their own community. Veterans also play a crucial role in Habitat builds with the discipline and knowledge it takes to build a home.
Home Ownership
We welcome our service members, veterans and families to apply for a Habitat house. This is an entry way into homeownership and we hope just a temporary parking spot to help you succeed, flourish and grow. Our homes are typically 3 bedrooms and 1 bath, usually around 1400 square feet. Email [email protected] to see if there is a build coming soon to your neighborhood. See the requirements on the Home Ownership tabs and to have an application packet set to you. Are homes are zero or near zero interest rates on the house only. Habitat holds a 30 year ground lease for rights of first refusal and to keep it an affordable house for the next family. The average mortgage payment is between $700-$900 a month which includes principle, taxes and insurance and a small ground lease fee. To apply for a home, please email [email protected] to have an application package sent to you.
For critical home repairs and homeownership, you need to have a general or honorable discharge. You must not have been convicted of a federal crime or be on a sex offender list. For questions regarding critical home repairs please contact [email protected]
